Nowadays, the increase in the proportion of overweight and obesity among children is not only a matter of individual households but also one of the top concerns of each country. If your kids are obese, what need you to do to help them reduce their body weight and maintain healthy?
Childhood obesity results from a number of different objective and subjective causes, such as unscientific diets (out of balance with the needs of the body), or by the related factors (reduced physical activity, stress, environmental pollution and social problems …). People are concerned about obese in children because it is a long-term threat to health, longevity and prolonged obesity into adulthood, which will increase the risk of getting chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gallstones, fatty liver, and some cancers. Obesity also hinder children from fully growing, which can easily result in serious influence on their psychology such as inferiority complex, timidity, lack of sociability and bad learning capacity. Moreover, obesity in children can be the origin of future health disaster. Therefore, losing weight for obese children is always a “hot” and urgent problem that family and society need to pay heed to.

When your kids are obese, you should note the following issues to create a safe weight loss plan for them:
1. Do not apply all methods simultaneously:
Adults can apply multiple methods to lose weight; however, for children, to use diet pills, exercise and reduce rations in half, etc. Concurrently is not recommended as it may make children exhausted and sick.
Follow your doctor’s advice and bear in mind that to lose weight, moderation is what really matters. Take control of children’s weight to prevent fast weight gain. Helping children regain their optimal weight requires a long period of time. The sooner you discover your child’s obesity, the more effective the weight loss process become since it allow you to take advantage of the child’s developing stage.
2. Help your children to change their diets:
For young children, you should not force them to go on a diet like an adult. Instead, you can gradually reduce their daily calorie intake. You need to rearrange their meals (do not eat too many meals, do not eat snacks, etc.) and reorient themselves in selecting food. Instead of choosing a glass of fizzy drinks, guide the child to choose a glass of fresh fruit juice or water. Advise your child to have yoghurt in lieu of ice cream or cake for supper.
It is very difficult for young children to lose weight because they are not aware of the negative impacts that obesity has on them. Therefore, you ought to talk and analyze to them the consequences of gaining weight as well as the reasons why they should lose weight so that children will realize the benefits and voluntarily follow. If you force your child to follow, the child may react negatively and the resulted outcome may be the opposite of what you expect
3. Take physical activities with your children:
For children to reduce fat, apart from adjusting their diets, you need encourage children to get into the habit of practicing sports regularly. Support your children in playing sports and spare the time to play with them. When you and your children practice together, they will be more motivated.
Parents should choose exercises in the order from simple to complex. If walking, there will be no need to go much for the first day. Rather than take the elevator, advise your child to walk if the floor is not too high. Some of the sports that children can take part in to lose weight include running, walking, football, badminton, etc.
Parents should also note that, after taking physical activities, children tend to be hungry and thirsty. If you let them drink sugary drinks or eat fatty or sweet foods, the energy burned will be offset immediately, so just let children have fresh water and fruits only.
4. Share and help children overcome anxiety and derision from their friends:
Obese children often meet with the provocation from friends and people around them. In such cases, children are prone to feel self-depreciating, making them angry and not sociable with friends.
Families, especially parents and teachers at school play a very important role in helping obese children stabilize their psychology. Keep the family meals abundant with vegetables and limit the amounts of fatty and sugary food. Do not keep sweetened drinks, cakes and candies in the refrigerator or within children’s reach.
Adults should not sit too long before the cameras to set an example for children. At school, it is the teachers who console children and help them be more easygoing.
Parents should not scold the child when he or she is not truly determined to lose weight. Having a calm and relaxed mind will make them excited about implementing methods of losing weight that adults guide them.
